Environmentalism at HAPCAP

Grass root efforts to make Hocking Athens Perry Community Action more environmentally friendly started in 2003.

One of the first initiatives was a recycling “program” through which the agency collected and recycled white paper and cans. Environmentally conscious employees soon stepped up- offering to collect a wider array of recyclables and haul them to the county recycling center. The agency promoted the effort by letting employees use an agency vehicle to deliver the recyclables.

As the environmental movement gained momentum throughout the early and mid 2000s the agency began to feel a responsibility to act as a community role model.

What is now officially the "Green Committee" convened in 2008 and has been instrumental in helping the agency make a more formal commitment to environmental responsibility. HAPCAP’s current recycling program was kicked off in April 2009. At that time recycling bins (acquired through a partnership with Ohio University), which are tended to by agency maintenance staff; were placed throughout the main office and signs were developed and posted to educate employees on how to recycle.

Environmental responsibility was the theme of HAPCAP Staff Day 2009 during which members of the recycling committee hosted a panel on HAPCAP’s environmental initiatives. Additionally, the office supply room is stocked with recycled materials when possible and employees are encouraged to return lightly used materials for reuse.

The first annual HAPCAP employee swap meet was held at the main office in 2009 allowing employees to get rid of their unwanted items without throwing them in the trash. In an effort to conserve energy at the main office, the maintenance staff has removed excess light bulbs and common areas are kept minumally lit until needed.

HAPCAP is proud of the strides it has taken, but acknowledges there is much room for progress and plans to strengthen its commitment to environmental responsibility in the years to come.
