Environmentalism at HAPCAP
Green Programming
The story of our region will be forever linked to the environment. This is why HAPCAP needs to be a leader in addressing environmental issues. Many people in our communities including elected officials and even HAPCAP staff members may be unaware of HAPCAP’s commitment to environmental issues. However, if you examine HAPCAP’s programming it becomes clear that “green” or “environmental” issues are core to the agency’s mission are reflected in many programs.
Food Bank Programs
The Food Bank
The Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Bank has the resources to collect and distribute food that would otherwise have been wasted from growers, manufacturers, retailers, and processors.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is reducing the amount of fuel they consume by delivering meals three days a week as opposed to five.
Housing and Community Development Programs
Weatherization
Weatherizing reduces the amount of natural resources needed to heat and cool a home which, in turn, minimizes the amount of harmful waste introduced to the atmosphere.
Home Repair and Rehabilitation
Repairing homes decreases the construction of new homes which requires far more energy and materials than maintaining existing structures.
Water & Sewer Program
The Water and Sanitary Sewer Program provides grants to rural communities as they work to comply with Environmental Protection Agency mandates which include proper disposal of sanitary waste.
Other Community Development Programs
The Community Development staff has been involved in millions of dollars worth of community development projects, each of which involves an extensive environmental review to ensure that the projects do not have a negative impact on the environment.
Community Services Programs
Hocking WIA Youth Program
Environmental friendliness and sustainability continue to be a incorporated in the Hocking WIA Youth Program. The theme of 2009’s summer program was “Going Green,” and the 2010 program had environmental focus as well.
Transportation
HAPCAP now operates both Logan Public Transit and the Inter City Bus Route, both of which help curb carbon emissions and fuel consumption by minimizing the use of personal vehicles.
