The program provides comprehensive family and child development services in Athens, Hocking and Perry Counties. Early Head Start is currently funded to serve 96 pregnant women and children, and our staff includes 8 qualified, enthusiastic Home Visitors, a Program Coordinator, and a Health and Nutrition Coordinator.

Each Early Head Start families receive 90-minute weekly home visits, using the Parents as Teachers Born to Learn curriculum. The program also offers twice monthly socialization events at a variety of locations in the community, which provide an opportunity for children and parents to socialize, learn more about current parenting topics, share a snack, and try new activities. Families who attend socializations get a $10 Kroger/Walmart gift card!

Early Head Start serves families through:

Providing extensive education and support to parents about developmental milestones, health, safety, nutrition, budgeting, and appropriate child activities
Conducting routine vision, hearing, nutrition, and developmental screenings
Connecting families to social service resources and sharing information about community events
Assisting with planning for the future, including goal setting, and assistance transitioning into Head Start or preschool.
Collaborating with outside agencies to provide the most efficient services possible
Offering Newborn Visits from a Registered Nurse for our new moms!
Promoting strong parent-child interaction and focusing on the home as learning tool
Always recognizing that the parent is a child’s first and most important teacher!
